The reasons why we are fighting.

The Winterbourne Arms is an idyllic country pub formerly known as "The New Inn" but the origins of the building date back over 300 years as a former bakery. Although the building has been refurbished it has retained many of its original features. One can still see where the old bread oven was situated all those years ago.

In addition to being a key meeting place for the villagers of Winterbourne, the pub is ideally positioned for country walkers, local businesses and travellers (being just 3 miles from Newbury and M4 junction 13).

The Winterbourne has had a long history of being a popular and successful gastro pub as evidenced by the Trip Advisor reviews.

In 2015, Jan Simpson purchased the Winterbourne Arms. Jan had never operated a pub before, her background was in finance in industry. She and her partner had always had a dream of running a pub.  Her lack of experience and shy personality led to her not being able to create a welcome atmosphere in the pub which had a major impact on the business. This was compounded by the untimely death of partner, ultimately resulting in her having a breakdown and no not being able to manage the pub any longer and closing it.

Jan put the Winterbourne up for sale and it was purchased by Mr Roffe in August 2018. Jan sold the pub to Mr Roffe on the basis he was going to reopen it.

Mr Roffe has not made any attempt to reopen the Winterbourne Arms. Instead he has gone directly to redevelop it into a house.

We want our pub back for ourselves in Winterbourne, the fellow members of the Winterbourne Parish in local villages, all the walkers and business people that used to visit the Winterbourne Arms
